As China moves to improve its financial and legal
structure to accommodate the increasing needs of
inbound and outbound investment, venture capitalists
and other stake holders are expressing concerns
over perceived chronic problems. Issues at stake

the infringement of intellectual property rights,
security concerns over technology transfers, export
control regulations, and legal protection for investors.
The four panelists have extensive work experience
in private equity, venture capital and securities
regulatory supervision. They will share their thoughts

address:
Geopolitical Outlook for Asia and the World
The
economy is the engine that
is driving China・s rise towards becoming the next
global power. China・s economic liberalization,
focus on high-technology
and manufacturing, and low-cost labor supply have
turned the country into a formidable exporting machine.
Its
rising class has purchasing power of unprecedented
scale and scope. Efforts at reforming major industrial
sectors are slowly paying off. Renewed relations
with its neighbors in Asia clearly demonstrate China・s
proclivity to become a regional player. How will
the world, including
Asia, accommodate China・s peaceful rise as a global
power? What challenges will China pose to the current
geopolitical system? With its economic clout and
soft
political power, what type of role does China want
to have in the world?

Three:
Investing in Social Capital: Public Health
Challenges in
Greater China
One of the most pressing issues facing the region
is public health. Asian economies were battered by
both
SARS and the avian flu in 2003. China just started
to address the AIDS epidemic and initiated several
programs
to combat the spread of the disease. A panel of
AIDS researchers and public health experts
will provide an update on the AIDS crisis in China,
assess the region・s public health care infrastructure
in handling sudden outbreaks, and discuss the challenges
in containing the spread
of AIDS and other contagious diseases.

Asia's Entry into Hollywood: An Up-Close
and Personal Look
The popularity
of martial arts films such as Crouching Tiger,
Hidden Dragon and Hero have increased Hollywood・s
awareness of the talent and creativity in Asia.
How does this affect the domestic film industry
in Hong Kong, China, and Taiwan? Are Asians earning
the respect of Hollywood? How are attitudes and
stereotypes slowly changing? Do audiences want
to see more movies acted, produced, and directed
by Asians? Local stars including an actor, director,
producer, writer, and scholar will share their
personal experiences and thoughts on the Asian
presence in Hollywood.

Registration
for mentoring session
The
mentoring program is a tradition of the Committee
of 100. Each year, a
few members, representing different professions,
volunteer to lead a mentoring program for promising
young university students. In small break-out
groups, the mentors and students discuss career,
education,
business ethics, goals, and other issues on their
minds. Local universities will be asked to nominate
students between the ages of 18 to 25 for this
session. Each registered conference participant
may also nominate one student. |
